Hi! I'm Soma. I created my brand Soma’s Aromas at our Pittsfield home, in early 2018 after a long battle and miraculous, self-healing phenomenon, using a strict micro-dosing protocol made of cannabis flower and organic coconut oil. This is how I did it.
In 2011, I fell down a flight of broken stairs and sustained a permanent injury/disability consistent with a pelvic fracture dislocation. This injury changed my life forever. Home bound and couch bound with very limited activity on “good days” was my life; I was nearly nonexistent at my sickest. The pain affects me every single day.
The trauma from my fall made my strange life-long symptoms worse, but it saved my life by getting properly diagnosed. I was so sick with no answers. Though it took me 13 years actively looking for the cause, a specialized integrative doctor diagnosed me with late stage neurological Lyme disease with multiple co-infections, any and all can be disabling and/fatal. I had so many hospital appointments, emergency rooms, years of in-home physical therapy, in-home nursing, and intravenous medicine, on top of many protocols that didn’t get me any better.
In 2015, I started my cannabis coconut oil protocol, replacing 2 years of pain management and medication. Not only did it help my pain, I was successful at treating my chronic illnesses and eventually got everything into a remission/dormant stage. It felt like I had been in a 10-year coma and my brain needed stimulation.
In 2017 is when my candle making began. I wanted better, healthier candles, so I perfected my recipe and created my brand. I also have a history of working in hospitality and incorporated that into my product and the way I sold. Most importantly, it was my way to treat and face my medical ptsd, agoraphobia and severe anxiety, from the years I was at home. I couldn’t wait to get back into my community.
In 2018, I started selling my soy candles to local businesses, such as The Red Lion Inn, Tanglewood, Hotel Commonwealth, and more. I worked closely with each buyer/owner with purchasing and/or creating custom aromas and labels.
In 2020 COVID shut everyone and everything down. It was a devastating time but very similar to how we had lived years prior. This time allowed me to refocus and learn how to create and code my website, to hopefully sell online. At the same time, my mother was starting to have serious health problems. She was moved into a rehabilitation center in Culver City, Ca after falling and injuring herself. Shortly after, she was diagnosed with a terminal brain disease. This was the most difficult time in my life and COVID made everything more difficult. I knew at that point in my life, I needed to focus on healing and prepare for what I was about to experience.
In early 2021, I traveled to Los Angeles to move my mother into a hospice home. She was unable to move and deteriorating. Upon returning, I found an empty storefront in the most perfect location, just minutes from our home. I could feel my mom with me, like it was meant to be. I also knew what I was facing with my mom’s condition and felt this would help me get through it, along with other therapies.
In August 2021, with support from my family, I made the leap and got the storefront keys. I opened during COVID mandates, on October 15th 2021. I made all of my products in-house and worked directly with local makers and artists, offering consignment. I wanted it to be a unique and friendly space everyone was welcome to sell in. At one point, I worked with over 60 consigners. I loved it, I had so much fun not only connecting with my community and the best customers from around the world, but most importantly, it got me get through the most difficult time in my life and helped changed me into who I am today.
My brick and mortar closed on December 24th, 2023 due to the lack of in-person shopping, inflation from the pandemic, and it was incredibly stressful, at times impacting my health and well being. I will continue online, making new products, and popping up at local businesses, just as soon as I physically can.
I appreciate you reading this, thank you.
Thank you for supporting me and my small business in the Berkshires!
XO,
Soma
